Match Report.
Three more points required and Barley will have sewn up second place but another evening kick-off meant Barley's squad was yet again stretched and so victory against an improving Verson Park was no certainty. Barley seemed to have the game under control during the early part of the game but struggled to push in attack as there confident mood was to be there downfall. Verson were forced into long range efforts only but were rewarded with a bit of luck in the 21st minute when Bradnick controlled the ball with his hand inside the penalty box and a penalty was awarded and converted into the top corner leaving keeper Pickett helpless. Barley were determined to turn it around though and just after half an hour got there equalizer. An excellent tackle in defence from Evans before he sent Wollaston on a fantastic run Wollaston returned the pass in the final third and Evans crossed for Hickman to head (or nose) in his fourth of the season. Barley were now in full flow, three minutes later Cartwright broke down the left and his low drilled cross was turned into his own net by the Verson defender. 37minutes and top goal scorer Richard Porter sent Barley in 1-3 up at the break. Wollaston again involved in the build up playing a timely through ball to Porter who turned well before running the length of the Verson half and slotting the ball into the corner. Half Time 1-3. If Barley hadn't made it hard enough for themselves in the first half they sure did in the second, Verson grabbing there second to make it 2-3 after last man Bradnick lost possession to the Verson forward on 50minutes. Verson played some direct football as they looked to take a point from the game but some solid Barley defending was enough to keep them out. Barley themselves had a whole host of half chances but were rarely onside. Barley's best effort to secure the victory came on the hour when Evans was brought down in the area for the games second spot kick. Stand-in captain Wollaston stepped up but it was a poor kick and was palmed away by the enthusiastic Verson keeper. The performance enough to give Barley the points there needed to finish in second place.
