Match Report
The afternoon started with Barley in confident mood following back to back league wins. The cup has been somewhat of a sore point in previous seasons as Barley until today had never managed more than a draw. The first half was competed well by both sides, a long ball from Shaun Porter found brother Richard and he netted his sixth of the season after 14minutes. It looked as if that goal was to be the only one to seperate the sides at half time, both teams looked eager to score and both created some good chances and it could have been a different storey but for some good keeping from Barley keeper Pickett. Smith made an impressive run on 40minutes taking the ball from his one penalty box to the other, seeing off the Verson Park midfield and defence but his final shot was rushed and clear of the bar. Barley doubled there lead right on half time after a Cartwright corner was flicked on by S Porter, the keeper fumbled with produced a goalmouth scramble and once again poacher R Porter tapped in from 2yards. Barley seemed then to sew up the game in first half injury time, a good ball over the defence found Green running through and he caught the ball on the volley and smashed the ball over the keeper and into the roof of the net in spectacular fashion. Half time 3-0. The second half started with Barley on the back foot, a range of long balls over the barley defence was to cause Barley trouble for the next 45minutes. Verson plucked away and just before the hour mark they pulled one back, an attack from down the left forced an excellent save from Pickett but the rebound was tapped in from close range. 10minutes later Verson pulled back another, a serious of poor mistakes let Verson in for another simple tap in. Barley looked nervous and vunerable despite taking off two attack minded players and replacing them for defensive minded ones to try and stregthen things up.Verson had the ball in the net again on 76minutes, a strike from the edge of the Barley penalty box was deflected in by a Verson attacked but the goal was ruled out due to the player being in an offside posistion. This decision sparked a lengthy protest from the Verson players but that was to be there downfall. The final 10minutes was played out with Barley looking to waste time and Verson still fuming from there ruled out goal so were unable to concentrate and force the issue. Barley winning there first ever cup game and leaving them in a good early posistion to qualify from the group.
