Match Report
Another cold afternoon at the Dormston and a game Barley were expected to take all three points from. Verson kicked off with just nine men in there line up heaping more pressure on the home side. Barley started in awkward fashion as Verson Park set out to show there nine men were to be no push over. However there early passion took a 7th minute blow when Barley top scorer Richard Porter worked his way past two defenders on the edge of the box and slotted nicely past the keeper clipping the post on the way in, 1-0. 10minutes later and Porter should have doubled the lead, a freekick swung in by Cartwright and a rare header from the striker was straight at the keeper. Verson were not to lie down though and continued to place in anticapation. 19minutes and a fabulous strike from nothing heading for the top left corner from the Verson number.8 produced a fantastic save from Pickett. 33minutes and a dangerous run from Cartwright saw him impeaded on the edge of the box and after much debate, Westbury saw his shot shave the post. The game was very much in Barley's hands but Verson park were not giving up, until a 37th minute strike from Wollaston killed there spirit. A trademark strike from the midfield powerhouse, 30yards out, a bit of time and space and a thunderous strike clipping the underside of the crossbar, 2-0. The second half was somewhat of a formality, captain Sewell leading from the back made sure that Barley kept a good 90% possesion. Substitues Bradnick and Blakeway both came on to make there debuts as well as Mark Hill getting some action from the bench. The half was slow and patient, Barley making chances a plenty but failing to be clinical, Evans, Hale, Wollaston, Bradnick and Green on several occasions all wasting chances. However miss of the match went to Westbury, a great strike from Wollaston from a freekick on 61minutes struck the bar and from 5yards Westbury blazed over with his left peg. Barley made it 3-0 and wrapped up all three points with 15minutes to spare, substitutes Hill and Blakeway combined, a ball inside from Hill found Blakeway whose powerful strike was parried in at the near post from the keeper. Not the most of entertaining of games, but another job done for the Barley.
