Match Report

Barley went into the game in confident mood following there 5-1 victory last week against Wombourne, however Wombourne with a changed side were to prove no walk over on there home ground. The game started with Barley having much possesion and pressing forward eager to find an early goal, Hickman and Hill both having tame efforts saved in the first ten minutes. Barley failed to create in the final third despite there dominance but did manage to break the deadlock in the 17thminute. A corner swung into the near post found the head of captain Sewell who directed the ball accuratly into the far corner. A minute later and in could have been 2-0, a ball over the top put Richard Porter in but he failed to capitalise and the low shot was saved comfortably by another stand in Wombourne keeper. Barley still the better side continued to push and created another clear cut chance just before the half hour, a long clearance from keeper Pickett and a flick from Westbury put Cartwright in the clear, his surging run into the box left him one on one with the keeper but he blazed well over the bar. The missed chance proved to be a turning point in the game and Wombourne produced there first real chance on 31minutes, a powerful drive just outside the box was heading for the bottom corner before Pickett got down to tip round the post. Less than five minutes later and long throw into the box from the Wombourne full back found a willing head which struck the Barley crossbar. Finally 7minutes before half time Marson failed to clear and gave the ball away, the Wombourne forward knocked it past Marson and then was sinically tripped and Referee had no doubt in awarding the spot kick. Wombourne's chance to equalize was wasted as the penalty was hit low but against the post. It did'nt take long to make up for the mistake though, less than a minute later and Wombourne equalized from close range following a bit of a goal mouth scuffle. Wombourne were very much on top and another strike just two minutes before the break was palmed away by Pickett but only into the path of the Wombourne striker who tapped in from close range. The goal however was ruled out through offside despite the Wombourne protests. Half time just coming at the right time for Barley, all square 1-1. Barley came out after the break knowing the game should have been sewed up in the first half hour but also knowing they were lucky to be on level terms after the last fifteen. Barley had the first opputunity of the second period 10minutes in, another Cartwright corner this time Finding the head of Shaun Porter but his headed was tipped just over the bar. It was a scrappy affair with both sides giving the ball away frequently, but it was Wombourne who took the upper hand with another set peice. 72minutes and a corner swung in was unchallenged by Barley and a free Wombourne head found the top corner, Wombourne 2, Barley 1. Barley tried to push Wombourne back but there play became desperate as Wombourne looked increasingly dangerous on the break. 78minutes a top scorer Richard Porter picked the ball up in the box following a slick through ball and he slid the ball home for 2-2. Barley now took the edge and 79minutes saw Cartwright dribble the ball into the box before having his heals clipped another penalty. Cartwright stepped up, but his effort was weak and saved easily. A late Sewell header from another corner was the last chance musted by either side but another simple save. The game finished on a sore note, 89minutes and Adam Marson and a Wombourne player both slid in for the ball and both missed and luckily neither were injured, however the referee saw different and Marson ended up in his note book. Barley need to be more consistent if they are to challenge for promotion.

League Tables.
