Match Report
A bitter cold November afternoon and a wet and soggy pitch were the settings for the final clinton cup group game between Barley Mow and Wombourne Wanderers. Barley started bright knowing that it was likey to be goal difference that was to decide the best second place team and a place in the semi's. Just 2minutes on the clock and a dangerous cross from Evans, but Hales failed to get good contact on the header at the far post. Wombourne got there first chance in the 4th minute after getting into the box they dragged the shot wide, it would be one of only two chances they could muster up in the first period. Barley continued to attack early and wasted there first clear cut chance on 9minutes when a ball from Cartwright found Richard Porter who rounded the keeper but was forced to wide and his shot flashed across the open goal. Barley managed to find the net 2minutes later, a ball from the right from Evans found Cartwright who dribbled past one defender and the keeper before walking the ball into the net, 1-0. 14minutes in saw Barley waste another golden opputunity, excellent work from Hales as he dribbled the ball past three Wombourne players before shooting from the edge of the eighteen yard box, his shot was well saved and the rebound fell to the feet of Richard Porter who couldn't miss from six yards, but he did. The pace of the game started to slow, Westbury gulity of the next missed chance when he popped up in the box and shot wide of the far post from a tight angle. The game became flat and fizzled out to half time with Shaun Porter missing the only other chance in the halfs last 20minutes, his header wide of the post from Cartwrights corner 3minutes before the break. Half time 1-0. Barley knew goals were the priority heading into the second half and were given a major set back from Wombourne finished an easy chance to level the score on 52minutes, qualification looked slim. Barley fort back and a tactical change saw Shaun Porter push forward. 2minutes after the equalizer and Evans had a shot saved by the legs of the Wombourne stand in keeper and the the rebound from Shaun Porter rattled the under side of the cross bar and in, 2-1, still hope. Half an hour to go and a corner to Barley was whipped in from Cartwright towards the far post and in with the aid of a deflection 3-1. Barley still pressed but got desprate with some long range efforts as Wombourne failed the let them in at the back. 10minutes from time a surging run from the back from Marson who played the ball into Hill who unselfishly squared for Cartwright to tap in his hatrick. A minute later and Cartwright grabbed a fourth with another assist for substitute Hill after a goal mouth scrabble, 5-1. Thats were it ended, Barley disapointed as there believed it would not be enough for qualification. Other results meant all the teams finishing second in each group ended up with the same points and goal difference forcing a playoff group to decide the last semi-final place.
