Match Report

Barley's poor run of results came to a close in there last fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers Deaf, winning 3-0 to lead Group A in the Beacon Cup. Barley were hopeful of securing a semi-final spot as they travelled to fellow league strugglers Codsall Athletic. Barley started the better of the two sides and soon got a good chance to take the lead just 5minutes in, some good work from Richard Porter before putting Blakeway through into the box but his shot was palmed away by the Codsall keeper before Cartwright blazed the rebound over from the edge of the box. 9minutes in and needless free kick was conceded by Codsall just inside there own half, Bradnick floated the ball in and again the keeper was forced to palm away, this time for a corner. 11minutes gone and Barley again had another superb opportunity, a long goal kick by Russell was flicked on by Richard Porter to send Cartwright away down the left and into the box before shooting low and just wide of the far post. Quarter of an hour in and Barley's luck soon changed, poor communication between Westbury and Bradnick at the back left Bradnick making a rash challenge just inside the penalty area resulting in a penalty kick. The Codsall forward stepped up and stroked the ball home 1-0. The middle part of the first half was full of stops and starts both teams sloppy in possession but the half soon came to life again on 40minutes. Good build up play by Barley from back to front, resulting in Wollaston slipping the ball through to Blakeway on the edge of the box and Blakeway drilled the ball hard past the Codsall keeper 1-1. Barley could not believe there luck when just a minute later the referee awarded them a penalty for a dubious handball, captain Wollaston stepped up and converted the kick 1-2. The half however wasn't finished there, 43minutes and a Codsall corner saw Barley keeper Russell commit but got nowhere near the cross leaving for a simple header and equalizer 2-2, Half Time. The teams came out for the second half and it was to be no different to the first, both keepers called into action to make fantastic stops on numerous occasions, Barley were the better of the two sides missing some real guilt edge chances. Cartwright broke free in the 51st minute to cross for Richard Porter but his header was tipped over by the Codsall keeper. Substitute Shaun Porter missed the cream of all chances breaking clear of the Codsall defence with dangerous long ball and putting the ball wide of the post when it was easier to score. Barley then were hit with the sucker punch in the 75th minute, punishment for failing to take there chances as the Codsall forward walked through the Barley defence before hitting the ball home 3-2. Barley were now desperate and through everything forward and then again tied the score in the 83rd minute. A Cartwright corner was deflected into the net by a Codsall defender pressurized well by Shaun Porter. Codsall gould have snatched the points two minutes from time but for a brilliant Russell stop and Barley's Shaun Porter could have done the same at the other end deep into stoppage time but again the Codsall keeper made the save, final score 3-3.
