Match Report

Hill Top Rangers currently lying third in Division One were the visitors to The Dormston for today's fixture. Barley manager Stuart Cornaby rated Hill Top as the best side he has seen in the division before the game and so was expecting a real test especially after two previous defeats in league and cup earlier in the season. The weather was dry butter very windy and The Dormston surface was looking very hard and uneven to make for difficult match conditions. Both sides battled to conditions in the opening 15minutes canceling each other out and failing to get to close to goal. Barley though were the side who looked the brighter and came close to an opening goal 19minutes in, Hickman won the ball in midfield before playing Freeman in, his shot was parryed away to the keeper left falling to Cartwright on the edge of the eighteen yard box who chipped the ball over the keeper goal wards but falling just wide of the far post. 22minutes and Barley continued to pile on the early pressure and Freeman was again involved heading a Bradnick free kick across the box, Cartwight again picking up the loose ball before a superb tackle forced a corner. Barley finally got the lead they deserved just before the half hour, a throw in down the left was flicked on by Hickman for Blakeway to turn an shoot on the half volley into the far corner of the net 1-0. Barley did not leave it at that and still pushed on looking for a second, 39minutes saw Hale play Blakeway down the left who made it to the by-line before pulling the ball back for Hickman who blazed over. Just a minute before the end and Freeman found himself in a similar position to earlier in the match, Hickman played a through ball for Freeman to have his shot saved well by the Hill Top keeper, Half Time 1-0. Barley knew that the second hard would be harder than the first, defending the lead, Hill Top came out determined to pull back Barley's lead. Hill Top piled the pressure on for 45minutes but a combination some stern defending and two or three outstanding saves from Russell in the Barley goal kept Hill Top out. Barley looked dangerous on the break but were foiled on many occasions by the offside flag. Final score 1-0.
