Barley kicked off the new league campaign with a home fixture to established first division side Red Star Rangers. Both sides looked comfortable on the ball early it was difficult to tell who would come out on top. It was Red Star who opened the scoring after just 7minutes, the defence caught out of posistion at the back as the Red Star forward ran through and got past the challenge of keeper Russell before rolling the ball into the empty net despite Shaun Porters efforts to clear off the line. The mistake was enough to shake the Barley backline who were then on superb throughout, keeper Russell commanded his area and the back three of Shaun Porter, Stephen Bradnick and Michael Cornaby won evey ball that come there way and looked composed on the ball. It took Barley just as long as Red Star to get there reply, 14minutes in and Evans found a gap in the defence to play in Club Captain Hill who slotted the ball neatly home for 1-1. Barley took hold of the game and looked the more likey of the two to go on front, Hill almost getting his second on 20minutes but for a good save and Blakeway coming close on 24minutes just shooting wide. The half ended 1-1 but it was only a matter of time before Barley got in front. The second half got under way and 55minutes in arrived what we knew was coming. Blakeway playing a good ball out to Hill on the wing who swung the ball in low for Richard Porter to finish on the half volley from close range 2-1. Barley continued to dominate winning eveything in defence, midfield and in attack and keeping possesion with numerous passing moves. Blakeway was fantastic in midfield and scared the Red Star defence with his pace and touch and scored a wonderful goal utilizing these strengths on 73th minutes. Shaun Porter also got on the scoresheet two minutes from time with a run very mush like Blakeway's but with a much more suttle finish. Final score Barley 4-1 Red Star.
