Match Report

Smethwick visited the Dormston for Barleys second league game of the season, a game that saw the return of former Barley player Alan Pickett. Smethwick started the brighter of the sides and maintained there high tempo throughout the first half. The game was a hot affair both sides making tough challenges but creating little in the final third. Smethwick seemed to have the edge looking dangerous as they attacked constantly but lacked a cutting edge to churn out a real chance. Barleys struggled to get forward but created probably the best chance of the first half in the 35th minute when Evans played Hill into the penalty area but he was quickly closed down and his shot was saved comfortably by the Smethwick keeper. Half Time 0-0. The second half saw more of the same action with tough a tough midfield battle and a lack of creativity to begin with. Smethwick opened the scoring 4minutes into the half as the Smethwick forward broke clear down the right before knocking the ball comfortably over the head of keeper Russell 0-1. Barley came close to an equalizer two minutes before the hour with an inswinging corner finding Westburys head but the post kept Barley out. Then right on the hour mark Smethwick broke free of the Barley defence, keeper Russell was forced into a one on one situtuion with the Smethwick forward and nearly saw Red two matches in row after pulling down the Smethwick player for a penalty. Luckily the referee only produced yellow. Ex Barley player Pickett stepped up to settle some old scores but blazed the ball over the bar. Smethwick finally sealed the victory on 70minutes later after breaking down the right and forcing there way into the box and finishing with a thunderous strike. Barley produced there best chance late on when substitute Richard Porter recieved a super cross finding him all alone in the box but he headed the ball wide of the target. Another gutting performance from Barley, now two poor defeats in a row. Barleys defensive player the only positives to come from the games, a real lack on creativity going forward and a lot hard work and heavy thinking to do before next weeks clash with top of the table Thornycroft.
