Match Report
With Barley going through a tough patch of late, a League Cup match was an ideal break from the league troubles. Wolverhampton Wanderers Deaf would pose the opposition to Barley's first ever Beacon Cup game. The Dormston turf was soft and sticky following a weeks worth of damp whether and Barley lined up with Sewell in goal as Russell was missing through suspension and Hennessey made up the back three after Shaun Porter pulled up in the pre-match warm up with a hamstring injury. Wolves started the better of the two sides but the spell would only last five minutes as Barley soon found some rhythm. Barley's first chance fell to captain Wollaston who headed wide from a corner ten minutes in. Barley soon settled some nerves when Blakeway opened the scoring, Hill with the throw down the right which was neatly controlled by Hickman who then took on the Wolves defence before a piledriver of a shot found the rear end of Blakeway and the back of the net, 1-0. Barley played some nice football and kept Wolves pinned back for the most of the half, attacking well via Hill and Blakeway down the flanks. Despite Barley's pressure the Wolves defence protected there keeper well and Barley's only other significant chance of the first period came just after the half hour. Bradnick curled the ball in from the right with his left peg but it evaded everyone's heads and the keeper to find the back of the net only for the referee to rule the goal out as the free kick was indirect. Half Time 1-0. The second half got underway and instantly Barley made an impact, Blakeway with a good ball into Hickmans feet who pushed and weaved his way through the Wolves defence before smashing the ball home on his left foot, 2-0. Barley's second opened the game up as Barley created a hat-full of chances. 56minutes saw Richard Porter break free down the left to create a one on one but the keepers legs got in the way. 58minutes saw Richard Porter again break free, this time crossing for Hill who blazed over from two yards. Richard Porter then was foiled several more times by a fantastic display by the Wolves keeper. 66minues and Barley wrapped up the victory as Hill ran into the box and neatly slotted the ball under the keepers body. Ten minutes from time and Barley had a second goal disallowed as Blakeway shot from the right and Richard Porter knocked the ball into the empty net only to be ruled offside. Substitute Price got the final chance of the game breaking free down the left but once again the legs of the Wolves keeper denied Barley another goal. To sum up, a more improved performance creating chances a plenty which is what's being lacking of late and a real plus point getting a clean sheet, well done all the lads.
