Ancestors of Paul & Barbara Barrett

Welcome to my family history web site. I have spent many hours researching my family history at various libraries and archives, and I would like to acknowledge the considerable information obtained from the efforts of various Family History Societies in recording parish registers, monumental inscriptions etc.

I would also like to acknowledge the considerable information obtained from some of my fellow-researchers, particularly Julie Skellern. Ann Wright, Bronwyn Smalley, Judy Armstrong, Judy Stephenson, David Hamilton, and Mardella Stimac, with apologies to any others I have inadvertently omtted.

My great great grandfather William Barrett moved to Leeds around 1830 from Farnhill, in the parish of Kildwick, between Keighley and Skipton. The name Baret is mentioned at Farnhill in the Domesday Book and in the 1379 Poll Tax, so it is likely that my Barrett ancestors have been in Yorkshire for many centuries.

In fact, in researching my ancestral lines, apart from 2 links to Lincolnshire, my ancestry seems to be pure Yorkshire as far back as I can trace it. However, many brothers and sisters of my ancestors have emigrated to USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

On the other hand, various branches of Barbara's ancestry moved to Leeds during the Industrial Revolution, and can be traced back to Suffolk, Birmingham, Beith (Ayrshire) and County Antrim.
