YOUR CHANCE TO HELP PRESERVE OUR TRANSPORT HERITAGE
Barrow's public road transport began in the 1870s in the days of horse drawn buses at a time when this important railway, industrial and shipbuilding town was rapidly growing from its beginning as an agricultural village.
Barrow Transport Museum Trust has been formed to help preserve examples of the road transport heritage of Barrow, Furness and South Cumbria. The project began with the formation of a support group, Barrow Transport Group, through which members can assist the Trust in a variety of ways including practical help with restoring vehicles. The aim of the Trust, which is hoped to be registered as a charity, is to eventually display a representative range of vehicles, together with related artefacts and memorabilia, in a permanent museum.
Now you can help the Trust by becoming a member of Barrow Transport Group. As a member, you will receive regular newsletters, have the opportunity to travel on historic vehicles, take part in special events and regular meetings as well as contributing actively with restoration.
Already, the Trust has available 2 ex-Barrow Corporation Leyland PD2/40 of 1958 which were restored by group member in 1996. Future projects include the restoration of ex-Barrow Corporation Leyland PD2/3 Number 147.
