At the heart of impro, there are a few simple principles. Follow these, and you'll be three-quarters of the way to becoming an accomplished improviser.

You can even try applying these principles to your life generally - you may get some startling results!

1. Say "Yes"

Always accept what others have said, and build on it. Dont be negative or obstructive. (Even if you disagree - do it in a constructive way.) That way, things move forward.

2. Take risks

Push boundaries, raise the stakes, get into trouble - it's more fun!

3. Jump and justify

Say or do something first, then look for the reason why - or get your partner to! Requires confidence - but can produce sparkling originality.

4. Dont fear failure

In impro, nothing you ever do can be "wrong". "Failure" is just a situation that you hadnt planned to be in. And its your opportunity to shine. Step out boldly; respond in a good natured way, and you'll impress everyone with your skills.

5. Be physical

Move, act things out physically - dont just stand rigid like a lamppost when you speak.

6. Be Emotional

Put some emotions in your voice and on your face. Let others know how you're feeling.

7. Look into the eyes

When you're not sure what to say, look into your partner's eyes.

8. Looking Good

Always make your partner look good. Ensure that they have a good time.

9. Dont try to control

Give your partner a chance to speak. Dont overly try to control things. Go with the flow.

10. Look and Listen

Remember to listen to your partner. Watch carefully, too, so that you can pick up - and accept - any non-verbal "offers" that they make.
