Nelson Corporation Bus Routes

On 1st September 1923 the first bus services commenced operation in Nelson. Initially there were three routes., all operating from the Market Square; to Cloverhill (later Sackville St.), Waidshouse Road. and Marsden Hall Road.

Until the formation of the Burnley, Colne & Nelson Joint Transport Committee in 1933, Nelson Corporation used letters to identify their routes as follows: -

From Market Square

A       to      Sackville Street via Brunswick St.

B      to      Waidshouse Rd. via Railway St.  returning via Hibson Rd.

C      to      Waidshouse Rd. via Hibson Rd. returning via Railway St.

D      to      Marsden Hall Rd via Barkerhouse Rd and return.

December 1927

A       to      Sackville Street

B      to      Waidshouse Road via Railway St, Chapelhouse Rd &  Beaufort St. and return.               

C      to      Haggate via Hibson Rd. and Halifax Rd.

D      to      Marsden Park or Town House Rd. via Netherfield Rd  &Barkerhouse Rd.

                 (Alternate Buses)

E       to      Valley Mills

I        to      Victoria Park (Carr Hall Rd.) via Carr Rd. 

M      to      Walton Lane via Every St., Forest St., Bradley Rd., Bankhouse Rd.,

                   Hilldrop Rd., Glenfield Rd., Walton Lane to junction with Marsden Hall Rd.

                 and reverse.

                    Barkerhouse Rd. (Alternate Buses) Buses to Town House return same way,

                 buses to Marsden Park return via Walton Lane.

E       to      Valley Mills

I        to      Victoria Park (Carr Hall Rd.) via Carr Rd. 

M      to      Marsden Park via Leeds Rd., Hilldrop Rd., Glenfield Rd., Walton Lane

                 returning via Barkerhouse Rd.

2nd June 1932

A       to      Sackville St.

B      to      Harle Syke via Railway St., Napier St., Beaufort St., Waidshouse Rd.,

                   Halifax Rd. & Haggate. (according to traffic returns for April 1932 some journeys operated via Hibson Road)

D      to      Hallam Road Top via Netherfield Rd., Barkerhouse Rd., & return.                

E       to      Valley Mills.

I        to      Victoria Park via Every St., Pendle St., Milton St., Park Ave.

M      to      Marsden Park gates (Marsden Hall Rd.) via Every St., Forest St., Bradley Hall Rd.,

                  Regent St., Walton Lane, Glenfield Rd., Hallam Rd. and return same way.

Nelson – Rosegrove via Hibson Rd., Marsden Cross, Melville St., Burnley, Gretna (joint with Burnley Corporation).

Former Nelson Corporation 18, Leyland Lion LT, TF 2230, with Leyland B32F body. Now in BCN livery waiting time in Market Square, Nelson going to Harle Syke. Note the gearless Lion behind, no 138, a 1936 LT7c with B38R English Electric bodywork. The Market Square was Nelson's bus station for all their local services.
