Dear Sir
A MATTER OF TASTE

Regarding the article “A Matter of Taste” in The Resident February 2008 issue can I say how much I agreed with all the sentiments expressed by the writer. Why do we have a memorial if we are unable to read the names of those we wish to commemorate?
The memorial to those who fell in the First World War is in good condition. Is it not time that we honoured those who fell in the Second World War in the same way and have a memorial worthy of their sacrifice that is simple, built of quality materials with the names of the fallen clearly legible; which would also help to improve the present site.
Ingatestone appear to have achieved this without causing any major upsets and unnecessary grief to families concerned. Possibly Wickford will soon be doing the same. What a shame that we in Billericay cannot resolve our problems and give the town a memorial to proud of.

Yours sincerely

Dear Editor

Following your diatribe on the World War II Memorial and the footbridge adjacent to the railway station in the previous edition of the Billericay District Residents’ Association newsletter, I should like to offer the idea below.
Realising that, being a like minded person as yourself, it would not be long before Mrs Jarvis would be writing to you. I knew that you would give her letter prominence in the next edition and, of course, you didn’t disappoint me.

If, as Mrs Jarvis claims she has a large like minded following, why don’t they do something positive like fund raising so that the World War II Memorial could be carefully dismantled and rebuilt in its present image on the same site using mare durable materials? Then she would really have something to tell the people of Billericay and, who knows the much larger number of residents who do not share her present views may join her in a project of this nature.

Yours truly

J.M. Dunn
