First Strokes

First Strokes Swim Schools is a unique and first of its kind, award winning swim school. Founded by Gillian Parker, (who has recently been named 2007 Business Woman of the Year) a professional swimming instructor, First Strokes was developed with its own approach to the learning process. Using its own purpose built teaching pools, and other private pools, they aim for the highest standards in teaching, staff and facilities. From its start in 2000 and a first term of just 70 students it now has 2 purpose built pools, 4 other private pools and now teach 4000 swimmers throughout our pools every week. Future expansion plans are already in the pipeline with sites identified in Braintree in Essex - Chelmsford in Essex - Ipswich in Suffolk and Paddock Wood in Kent

Round about October/November 2008 First Strokes bought DFW Leisure and took over the responsibility for providing swimming facilities in the pool at Lake Meadows Park. Whilst Basildon District Council still own the building First Strokes has taken over the lease which was once that of DFW Leisure.

Since taking over the facility First Strokes has spent tens of thousands of pounds refurbishing it and, in general, improving its appearance. The reception area has been significantly improved, a new viewing gallery and children’s play area built; the changing rooms have been refurbished and new changing lockers installed. The plant room has been inspected and passed fit for use.

David Perry, seen here with Gemma Stockwell teacher and lifeguard, is the manager of the pool and says that although much has been done to improve the pool there are some alterations still to be made. In discussing plans for the future the question of discounts for senior citizens was mentioned. David Perry explained that the company was privately owned and received no subsidies from local authorities; consequently it was unlikely, in the short term, to introduce discounts similar to those provided by DFW Leisure. However the subject could remain open for discussion at sometime in the future.
