Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior)               Map Ref 23

Native to Britain, common as urban and woodland tree. It has dark-green leaves with 9 or 13 slender leaflets; the black leaf buds are conspicuous in winter and it is the last to come into leaf. Actually the flowers appear before the leaves and give a purple tinge to the tree. The timber is strong and pliable with a coarse grain and is used for handles, oars and cricket stumps. There are very good examples in the park, the specimen tree indicated on the map is to the north of the lake.

Golden Poplar (Populus “serotina Aurea)       Map Ref 24

Usually planted for its yellow/golden foliage. The specimen to the west of the lake is situated close to other poplars and the differences can easily be seen. Beside the difference in the colour of the leaves it is not as tall as the other poplars and has a rounder shape.
