Letters to the Editor
Dear
Trevor,
I am glad to see that so many readers have written to you in support of
'The
Resident' following the anonymous letter printed in the previous issue.
I'm all for constructive criticism - not that any was forthcoming in
that
particular piece of poison. But people should remember that putting any
publication together, especially on a voluntary basis, requires a lot
of hard
work. It's easy for individuals to make cheap jibes, while cowardly
hiding
behind a mask of anonymity. It's an awful lot more difficult for them
to get
off their backsides and actually make a contribution. I agreed with
Barbara and
David Osborn's letter last month - there is too much negativity
already, both
in the media and society at large, so I appreciate 'The Resident's'
sunny
outlook.
I for one enjoy reading about what's going on in the community and the
history
of Billericay and I also enjoy the jokes, whether they're funny or not.
Maybe
that's because I make so many terrible gags myself. Keep up the good
work.

Dear Trevor,
Following
the printing of my letter about
It
is surprising just what goes on in Billericay behind closed doors. Who
would
have thought we have a group of Barbershop Singers in our midst. A
number of us
are members of Chelmsford Star Harmony, a 30 strong chorus which sings
to
audiences of 100 upwards around
I
wonder if any more of the men of Billericay would be interested in
having a
sing with us, or for that matter if any clubs, organisations or
residents would
like to be entertained? Joining these guys and singing was the best
thing I
have ever done.
John
Darwent.

It is unfortunate that your anonymous correspondent in the last issue chose not to give his name (therefore in danger of being labelled a crackpot) but he has a point. I am not really sure why I support you with my subscription. There are more important issues to be aired than a jokes section! I don't use the coach trips but they always seem to be full (are they block booked by organisations in advance)? You should also print a disclaimer about advertisers not being the cheapest and that readers should always shop around. We do not even get a discount for giving them our business (I paid a plumber £30 to release a nut!). It is a good way of publicising local events, coach trips and planning applications but little else I am afraid. I'm not even sure that the planning applications get in before they are done and dusted. Can we have more letters please about contentious issues, not just 'a poem what I wrote' or eulogising about Lake Meadows. I replied to the article by the CEO of SW Essex PCT about hospital car park charges which you chose not to print. I don't recall what you did print in that issue but there was probably no space due to something banal. There must be many more local issues which could do with airing. Perhaps Mr Anonymous would care to comment with his name.
Yours
John Cuthbert
