Developing an Early Love for Learning
Stephanie Ireland, Head teacher
| South Green Infant & Nursery School

Young girl in infant school, using a knife to spread butter on breadI feel privileged to have a Nursery as part of the school. Young children are a joy to work with and being part of their learning and knowing that they achieve such high standards gives a great sense of pride to our staff team.

I was made even more aware of this on a recent trip. Travelling home on the ferry I noticed two families who sat near us to enjoy some refreshment in the restaurant. The first to arrive had three children, none of them very old but all able to talk and express themselves clearly. They had obviously had a long journey and the children arrived telling the world how ‘bored’ they were with the whole situation. Nothing was right for them and the whole experience was obviously quite tedious. The next family to be seated had one child who was obviously thoroughly enjoying every experience offered. Thrilled to be there, content with her conversations,  a drink, some colouring books and loving every minute of the journey. Her wonderment was obvious and made every ‘passer- by’ smile.

This little girl, no more than three years old, reminded me so much of the children in our Nursery, thrilled to be there and loving every new experience, of which there are many. We have a qualified teacher leading a very experienced team and I know how lucky the children are. Along with our NNEB Nursery Nurse and qualified teaching assistants we are able to offer all the experiences the children need to fulfil their academic potential as well as the personal and social side of education. The curriculum is planned to ensure that there is progression and challenge.

Education should never be a ‘chore’. In the right environment children can enjoy practical experiences that will advance their skills and they will develop a lifelong love of learning that will be infectious to all around them.
