Dear Sir
With reference to the recent letters in the Resident concerning the BDRA and
its function in Billericay. As chairman of the Billericay Society I consider
the editor, Mr Trevor Stansfield is performing an excellent function by
publishing the many colour pictures of Billericay in the Resident.
These pictures remind residents of the culture and heritage buildings that
still exist in Billericay. These buildings may be the main reason why you
wanted to live here. The High Streets in many towns are drab, cubed boxed
shops cloning many other retail chain High Streets. Our High Street has an
excellent variety of architecture and character. How many of you have
studied these pictures to understand the history behind them?
If you want to know more about the interesting story that is Billericay, the
Town Council and the Billericay Chamber of Commerce expanded the annual
Billericay Society Town History walk to twelve walks this year. Billericay’s
story covers the Mesolithic flint hand axe finds to the present day campaign
to have Sun Corner registered as “Common Land”. The Billericay Society has
existed for 74 years – protecting our heritage and the Green Belt with its
many footpaths. If members of the BDRA want a cause-celebre it could
campaign to look after our roads and monitor pot holes. Mr Gandy, backed by
the Billericay Society, had the High Street’s potholes and some other badly
potted roads repaired within three weeks. Proactive action can be
successful. The Billericay Society’s remit is the High Street conservation
zone & green belt footpaths, the rest of Billericay is available for the
BDRA.
Yours sincerely
David Bremner
