Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa)    Map Ref 21

A native tree which thrives by rivers or in wet ground; it is, however, thought to be under threat by a new fungus. It has a regular branching habit and can grow to 22m. The leaves are rounded with a flat or even notched tip. The pendulous male catkins and the rounder female catkins grow on the same tree, ripening in spring and the ripe fruits remain on the tree through the winter and can easily be seen on the bare branches. Three good specimens can be found in a line north of the lake.

London Plane (Platanus x hispanica)        Map Ref 22

This tree is a cross between the Oriental and American plane dating back to 1670. It is a very common street tree, planted to use its ability to withstand pollution; its shiny leaves are easily cleaned by rain and it sheds areas of its bark and with it the grime and pollution. Three good specimens can be found in a line north of the lake.
