Children and the Community

Children from South Green Infant & Nursery School enjoy using the community as part of their learning. The old fashioned ‘crocodile’ still works well as children go on local walks and follow maps or visit local businesses. ‘Ridge’ Estate Agents played host to nearly sixty Year One children recently to help them learn about ‘houses and homes’.

You may have seen them or perhaps you have noticed the ‘Walking Bus’ that parents run to try to cut down on traffic around the school. We are all becoming more aware of our ‘carbon footprints’ and helping children to find out about their world is all important. Thinking of others is hard when you are so young but raising money for charity is one way we encourage children and their families to help others in a practical way.

You may have noticed the children of South Green arriving at school carrying a daffodil plant on St David’s day. Every child who is at school in the Autumn term, planted a daffodil bulb and then took it home to look after it. A lovely thing to do and much enjoyed, but whilst they were planting it they were thinking of those people who were ill and knew that they were going to try and raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer fund. Our celebration assembly on the 1st March enabled the children to proudly present their daffodils and over £440 was raised for the fund.

Megan Galaud and Joseph Parker look at some of the planted daffodils.
