White Poplar (Populus alba)             Map Ref 25

Native to areas from Western Europe through to Central Asia. It is a fast growing tree with a greyish-whie bark; the leaves are dark green with pale hairs on the underside. The leaves are on slender stalks and the lightest of breezes causes the trees to “whisper” and to display their white undersides. The “white” leaves of the sample indicated stand out from the other poplars by the path and it can be seen that the bark is whiter higher up the tree.

Cherry Plum Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera)  Map Ref 26

Common, found in hedges and thickets, it is the first to flower in spring before the leaves show. The example is a small group which may originally have formed part of a hedge line.
