The first WI in Essex was Billericay which celebrated its 100th birthday on 16 March 2016

President Doreen Potter was delighted to welcome 130 members who turned up for this once-in-a-lifetime Billericay event. There was a real party atmosphere among the members and I enjoyed taking photos of the gorgeous celebratory cake, banners, flowers, cards and, of course, snapping the lively ladies who enjoyed their special tea and a chance to listen to their guest speaker.

I appreciated my invitation and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with so many friendly ladies. This particular WI was founded during those dark World War One days and Mrs Potter and her team had carefully researched the town’s WI  history, which is fascinating.  The branch is exceptional in that it owns its own premises in St Edith’s Lane and members meet on Wednesday twice monthly at 2pm and enjoy a varied programme of lively speakers.  There are also outings, theatre trips, Friday coffee mornings, keep fit, choir and much more.
