Billericay Chess Club
It
is a wintry Wednesday night and there is nothing on the box, again! So why
don’t you get yourself along to Billericay Chess Club? We meet at The Fold
every Wednesday throughout the season which lasts from September to May. The
club runs two teams which both compete in the North Essex League and Knock
Out competitions. There’s a warm welcome waiting and a mug of tea on a good
night. Having enjoyed playing football all my life I needed just as exciting
an outlet when I had to give up.
What? You do not think chess is exciting! Every moment of the game you are sitting on the edge of your seat because you do want to win don’t you? The only trouble is that the fellow on the other side of the board keeps presenting you with tricky situations and the time just flies by. There are no dull patches in a game of chess and you often come away feeling thoroughly exhausted. Last season our A team came second in a league of eleven teams.
I lost most of my matches in my first season but what do you expect, like any sport you need to get back into training and improve your fitness in the game. When I started playing league chess, only ever having played for fun as a youngster, I was still very hazy about the rules and felt a bit self-conscious using a clock for matches, and horror of horrors keeping a record of all my moves. Still the club members are all very friendly and helpful and will sort out any of your chess problems on a club night.
If you think this might be just the excuse you have been looking for to get out of the house then phone Ian on 01277655564 or Charles on 01277622265. Otherwise just turn up at The Fold, any Wednesday evening, at 7.30. p.m There is convenient on site parking and all the equipment is provided by the club, chess boards and pieces, clocks and score sheets.
Of course if you really get bitten by the bug we have day time leagues running throughout the year where we play league matches round one another’s houses at a mutually convenient time to one another. So what are you waiting for?
