Fairtrade
in Essex
A
Fairtrade Town is a town, city, village, county, zone, island or borough
that has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using products with
the Fairtrade Mark. Community
organisations,
faith groups, businesses, schools and individuals all contribute to making
their area a Fairtrade Town by pledging to do what they can to support
Fairtrade and promote the Fairtrade Mark.
377 places have now been granted Fairtrade status including Billericay on 8 March 2008. We will need to renew this status next year, so do let us know what your group, school, business etc is doing (fairtrade@bdra.org)
In Essex the places with Fairtrade status are Basildon and District, Braintree and Witham, Billericay, Chelmsford (the first in Essex), Colchester and Harlow. Brentwood, Castle Point, Thurrock and Wivenhoe are all working towards gaining the status.
Essex County Council gave its backing to Fairtrade in 2005 and Essex Fairtrade groups are giving their attention to making Essex a Fairtrade county. As part of our campaign to make Essex a Fairtrade County, a meeting has been arranged for 6 November 2008 at Christ Church, New London Road, Chelmsford starting at 7.30pm. Interested?
