The Workers' Educational Association (WEA)

Logo of Workers' Educational Association

The Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is the UK’s largest voluntary provider of adult education. Ever since it was founded in 1903, in order to support the educational needs of working men and women, it has maintained its commitment to provide access to education and learning for adults from all backgrounds, and in particular those who have previously missed out on education.

Courses are created and delivered in response to local need, often in partnership with local community groups and organisations. The WEA believes that education is lifelong and should continue beyond school, college and university in order to help people develop their potential in a democratic society.

In keeping with these traditional values the WEA decided that its presence in Billericay should be restored following the closure of the previous branch a few years ago. Accordingly a “launch meeting” was held in May 2008 with a lecture on Essex Railways and the nature of WEA which was followed in the autumn by a short course of five evening lectures. Subsequently a course on Victorian London was commenced on 24 September in the Reading Rooms on the High Street which was attended by about 29 people.

As a result of these courses the nucleus of a branch committee was recruited but more members are required to ensure its success. If you are interested in becoming a member please contact the Chairman Mr Ian Gundle on 07802 264501 or e-mail ian.@nascroft.com

WEA Billericay intends to run a five week course on art entitled “Art and Ideas”  commencing Wednesday 25 February 2009 from 19.30 to 21.30 in the Reading Rooms, High Street, Billericay. The tutor will be Graham Slimming and the fee £35.
