This Month's Topics

Billericay Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

In our first edition of 2016 we are looking forward to celebrating 90 years of a Residents Association.  Quite an achievement even though there were some times during the war and just after where people’s thoughts were taken up with national events and how they impacted on the small town of Billericay and the villages of Little and Great Burstead and South Green.
The Association was at the heart of the issues of an expanding town and district. We are looking for any details you may have or know of where BDRA was involved.  Being part of the naming of the roads around St Andrews, campaigning against a supermarket being on the St Andrews site and on the site of the pub in South Green are three things which come to mind. There are bound to be many more. If you were active in BDRA or know of any committee members who have a story to tell please get in touch
resident@bdra.org or 01277 632390.

The Future

You are being asked to be part of the response to the Local Plan consultation which outlines further development and growth. See further details on page 7.
In Mike’s article last year he gave us all notice of the Plan and our responsibility to the generations who will follow us. I have heard people say it doesn’t matter what we do it will all happen. My reply is if you don’t make a response it will all happen. Make a response and there is a chance of adjustments being made.
I urge you to have your say to ask how the areas in Tye Common, Mountnessing Road, Potash Road. Frithwood Lane, Windmill Heights, Kennel Lane, Green Farm Lane and Southend Road will be able to accommodate the expansion of homes, people, cars and the services required. If you recall there were questions raised about the infrastructure in the 2014 Local Plan. They will be equally valid now.

BDRA 90

As part of our 90th Anniversary celebrations we are going to place a Time Capsule into The Cater Museum. A Time Capsule is described as  a container that is filled with objects considered to be typical of the present period in history and then buried, so that it can be dug up and studied much later. Our Time Capsule will not contain objects but thoughts and we want our members to help. We want to place into the time capsule your hopes and fears for Billericay. So if you have any suggestions please let us know at resident@bdra.org

As a starter here are a couple of thoughts. I hope that there will be enough GPs in Billericay and I fear that Elizabeth Cottage will be demolished and replaced by a multi-storey block of flats.

We will open the Time Capsule on our 100th anniversary in 2026 and it will be interesting to see how many of our hopes have been fulfilled and how few of our fears have occurred.

Our Star of this month is Vic Brown of Church Street has been delivering the Resident for 25 years. Vic has decided to retire from his round.  Thank you Vic for without people like you to deliver the Resident the Association would not have survived so far.
In the December Resident I said there were about 150 road reps. There are 177 so a large band of people are committed to ensuring you get your Resident.  Please help them by having your subs ready for the next year. If you are able to put it through their letterboxes with your name and address on the envelope it would be a great help. The subs will still be the remarkably reasonable price of 2 for the year.
If you can help as a road rep the details of vacancies are below

 This Could be YOU!
The Road reps are the backbone of the Association.  Without them you would not receive your Resident.  If road reps are not found for these rounds then the delivery will have to discontinue.  The best people to deliver to a road are those who live in it. These rounds only mean a time commitment of 20-30mins for 10 months a year and a little extra for collecting subs. Please don’t let the rounds disappear as the previous residents are likely to have delivered the rounds for many years.
