Annual General Meeting

Over 30 people attended the Annual General Meeting of the Billericay District Residents’ Association on Friday 20 May to hear a talk by Nick Shuttleworth, Executive Director or the Rural Community Council of Essex entitled “The Big Society”. I was quite pleased to learn that Mr Shuttleworth was not quite sure how to define The Big Society, at least I am not alone. The concept would appear to be acceptable, after all there are many people who work in the voluntary sector, but how does one explain the detail and subsequently put it into practice. I can’t help but feel that this is another instance of a policy being ill conceived, ill considered and rushed into being for political purposes.

In my opinion if this concept is to be a success it is necessary to go back to the drawing board, start again. Think what is to be achieved, consider it in depth, consult with the people and explain the objectives. This way there is a better chance that we all know what is intended and can offer considered suggestions and perhaps be motivated to enter into the spirit of things. Right now I am not impressed.

Following the talk, back to the business of the Association. The minutes of the previous AGM were considered and accepted, as was the Treasurer’s Report. The following people were elected to the Executive Committee:

Chairman                                                                    John Buchanan
Vice Chairman                                                            Trevor Stansfield
Treasurer                                                                    Ron Eaton
Secretary                                                                    Maureen Dann

Light refreshments were served and the meeting concluded about 10.00pm.
