WAITROSE - HIGH STREET

Planning Application Bas/0450/97 seeks permission to build A1 Retail Units with offices at 112/114 and 116/118 High Street, on the Public Car Park and open space to the rear of the High Street; the actual building will front the High Street between 110, Halifax Building Society and 120, Second To None. Overleaf on page 2 is a site layout plan showing the extent of the development, which includes a car park with spaces for 233 cars, and a drawing of the front of the proposed building as it would appear from the High Street.

Planning Application Bas/0452/97 seeks permission to provide additional parking space for 187 cars behind 91/101 High Street, using the existing entrance between Abbey National and New Look. It is intended to include a Site Layout Plan of this car park in the next issue of The Resident.

Lack of space in this issue precludes a detailed discussion of the pros and cons of these applications, again something for the next issue, but I believe that the building of a Waitrose store will bring many benefits to the town with few problems which cannot be resolved in discussions with the developer.

FLOWER FESTIVAL in St MARY MAGDALEN - BILLERICAY

The four churches of the Church of England Team Ministry in Billericay and Burstead will be celebrating with a Flower Festival in St Mary Magdalen, Billericay from 18 June to 22 June. St Mary's will be decorated with floral arrangements depicting aspects of the lives of St Augustine and St Columba, cathedral cities on the Pilgrim's Way 1997 and a series of arrangements interpreting the various stages on our own pilgrimage of life. This will be an opportunity to learn more about these pilgrim saints and the faith they brought to us.

Children from local junior schools will be invited to take part in the festival through the use of an education pack in their classrooms and by contributing artwork which will be displayed in the church during the festival. The church will be open to visitors at the following times:

Wednesday 18 June               10.00am to 4.00pm. A service of Holy Communion will open our                                            Festival at 10.00am. Refreshments and bookstall.
Thursday 19 June                10.00am to 4.00pm. Open to visitors. Refreshments and bookstall.
Friday 20 June                  10.00am to 4.00pm. Open to visitors. Refreshments and bookstall.
Saturday 21 June                10.00am to 3.00pm. Open to visitors. Use of the "triangle" (weather
                                        permitting) for refreshments.
        Sunday 22 June                  2.00pm to 5.00pm.

FAB '97 - Saturday 28 June - as usual the delightful church of St Mary Magdalene at Great Burstead has organised FAB, the "Festival At Burstead". There will be a concert on Friday evening and special services, including a special "Songs of Praise" on Sunday evening.

This year the centrepiece of the Festival will have a "United Nations" theme. On Saturday 28 June, from 11.00am to 4.00pm, in the church and grounds, there will be a wide variety of arena events and stalls plus many other attractions including fancy dress and cake competitions, a craft fayre and art exhibition.

For anyone interested in churches and their architecture this very attractive and historic church (the oldest parts of which date from the 12th century) will be open to visitors on Sunday afternoons from 3.00pm to 5.00pm until September.

SATURDAY 14 JUNE 1997 - "MUSIC FROM THE LAKE". Following the overwhelming success of the concert last year, the Lions Club of Billericay is pleased to announce another "Music from the Lake" event to take place at Lake Meadows, Billericay on Saturday 14 June 1997 from 7.00pm to 10.00pm. Gates open from 5.30pm. Price £8.50 advance sales - £10.00 on the night.

As last year the Brentwood Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by David Pickthall (Cantab) will be presenting an exciting programme ranging from light classics to themes from today's popular musicals.

Last year a profit of £10,000 was produced for distibution to charities and they are hoping for an even bigger crowd this year to create an increased surplus to benefit more worthy causes.
