Billericay is proud to be a Fairtrade Town

Enough Fairtrade goods - produced by disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries - are now available across Billericay to make Billericay a Fairtrade Town. It is hoped the town’s new status will raise awareness of the issue around the town. To celebrate the news there will be a Launch Event in St Mary Magdalen church on Saturday 8 March from 9.30am to 12noon. At 10.30am an official certificate from The Fairtrade Foundation will be presented to Billericay Town Council Chairman, Cllr Mr Beverley Beale. Certificates will also be awarded to all outlets providing Fairtrade products. The morning will be a chance to come and enjoy samples of Fairtrade products kindly donated by Waitrose. There will be a Traidcraft stall which will include the new Spring 2008 range of stock and you can try a quiz to see how much you know about Fairtrade.

A new cookery book has been produced for Fairtrade Fortnight called The Fairtrade Everyday Cookbook, containing over 150 recipes from Fairtrade supporters plus high-profile chefs and celebrities. Sample recipes from this book will be available to try and the book will be available from Storyteller. A directory of local shops, cafés and catering establishments that sell and stock Fairtrade goods, sponsored by The Billericay District Residents’ Association, will be available for the first time on 8 March.

ROAD REPS WANTED

Fairtrade goods can be bought in all of the major stores in Billericay – Waitrose, Somerfield and Co-op. Café in the Park sells Fairtrade refreshments, which can also be found in The Chequers Public House and the Inn on the Green. But it isn’t all about food and drink as Fairtrade towels can be bought in The Emporium. Companies, churches across the town and community organisations use Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar as well as the Billericay Town Council and Great Burstead & South Green Parish Council. Fairtrade products are a means to an end. What we are really about is trying to promote the principle of giving people a fair deal for what they produce.
