Fishers, Indiana, USA

Teachers and students at Billericay Park
Teachers and students at Billericay Park.

It was 5.15 am on Wednesday 30 September that I made my way, in a semi somnolent state, to Billericay school where I was to join teachers and students from the Mayflower and Billericay schools for a trip to our twin town of Fishers. We travelled by mini coach to Gatwick for a flight to Charlotte, scheduled to leave at 10.10am, where we had a two hour wait for the flight to Indianapolis. Members of Fishers' Sister Cities Committee met us at Indianapolis and drove us to Fishers where we had a meal and met our hosts.

students at Hamilton High SchoolThursday morning saw students and teachers arrive at Hamilton South Eastern High School (HSE) at 7.00am to spend the day in classes learning how American students are taught. The school is large having about 2500 enrolled students with a total capacity of some 2700. Lessons finished at 3.00pm and the English students spent the rest of the day with their hosts.

Another early start on Friday morning when students and teachers had to be at Fishers High School at 8.00am. Another large school with 2100 enrolled students and a total capacity of 2000. It is currently being extended to accommodate 2500 students.

Every year since 2005 the Sister Cities Association, in conjunction with the Ren Faire Executive Committee, has presented a Renaissance Faire which is intended to celebrate the similarities between Billericay and Fishers as well as providing learning opportunities for historical culture. It is a fund raiser for Sister Cities Association to provide scholarships as well as teacher/student exchange opportunities for students at Fishers High School and Hamilton South Eastern High School.

view of Ren FaireThe event, set in 16 Century Billericay, has grown in popularity over the years and hosts about 14,000 people over a two day period. Naturally our teachers and students attended this event and discussed the English way of life with American visitors to the Collegium tent. They also explained the mystery of making  tea and coffee the English way for the benefit of  those who wished to be educated.
On to Monday and a visit to the Indianapolis Speedway Track and museum followed by a picnic lunch in the park. Afterwards a tour of the Lucas Oil Stadium, the new indoor home of the Indianapolis Colts American football team, capable of seating 60,000 spectators and boasting a sliding roof similar to the one at Wimbledon. A magnificent building.

students at Billericay ParkThat the people of Fishers hold the twinning relationship with Billericay in high esteem is demonstrated by Billericay Park, named after Billericay,  which is considered to be the crown jewel in their park system. The park features eight baseball diamonds, four parking lots, a concession building, public rest rooms, four playgrounds, a multi-use perimeter trail, 10 acres of woodland, a batting cage, numerous benches and picnic tables, a community building with an attached shelter and a splash pad interactive water playground. Later the town council intend to install a red, British telephone booth. It also features play areas such as Mayflower Tots Lot and Norsey Wood.

Following a tour round Billericay Park we paid a visit to the Fire Department, the Police Department and the day concluded with a talk about Fishers by a town councillor. The following day, Wednesday, we returned to Billericay; everyone was impressed by the hospitality of their hosts and vowed to return to the town of Fishers at sometime in the future.
