The Bridge

before the bridge in 1981Around about 1998/9 the Billericay Town Council began discussing with Essex County Council and Network Rail the feasibility of renovating or replacing the footbridge near the railway station. For several weeks the pros & cons of both schemes were considered but the deciding factor was money and there was none available at the time. Consequently talks were discontinued.

the new bridge in 1981Now, some 9/10 years later, the bridge has been refurbished and reinstalled. That is good. One is not now ashamed to take visitors to town over the footbridge. However this does not make the design of the bridge more acceptable and, at the risk of being accused of nit picking, did it have to be painted light blue? Would a darker colour not have been more acceptable? Perhaps it would be aesthetically more pleasing to have removed the bridge permanently but this option should have been discussed with Essex County Council before it was refurbished. The photographs, circa 1981, show the area before and after the bridge was installed.
