Unfortunately the article entitled "CHAOS" in the SEPTEMBER edition of "THE RESIDENT" contained a misleading statement viz:- " a short while ago New Hamiltons Carpets applied for and was granted permission to change the use from A1(Retail) to A3(Hot Foods) and will no doubt in the fulness of time become a restaurant".
Whilst the owners of the building known as 20 High Street, Billericay, and now occupied by New Hamilton Carpets, have permission to change the use to A3(Hot Foods) the application was not submitted by New Hamilton Carpets. The owners of New Hamilton Carpets advise me that they have no intention of changing the use to A3 and will continue trading from the premises. Consequently I apologise for any inconvenience the article may have caused.
It doesn't seem almost twelve months ago we were making preparations for the installation of the Christmas Lights but as they say Tempus Fugit and here we are once again trying to organise the decorative lights for Christmas 1999. Already letters have been written to businesses and traders in the town seeking their financial support and in addition we have made arrangements for a Flag Day for Saturday 20 November when residents of the town can make their own contribution. It is an accepted fact of life that everything costs more year on year and so it is with the cost of providing the lights, this year we anticipate a total cost of the order of £9,500. The Association really does work hard to promote a community spirit, we contributed nearly £1000 to the cost of the lights last year, and engender pride in the town so we ask for the support of everyone to help us make Christmas 1999 one to remember. Donations should be sent to A. Evans 11, Porchester Road, Billericay CM12 0UQ.
The East Area Committee wrote to Basildon Council expressing concern about the reduced visibility to the north by motorists approaching the roundabout from Jacksons Lane. In reply the Council pointed out that the visibility requirement for a mini roundabout was not as rigorous as that for a T junction because motorists are required to slow down when approaching the mini roundabout. They are also of the opinion that to move the give way line in Jacksons Way would adversely affect the safety of the roundabout. However it is the Council's intention to monitor the new road layout to ensure that its operation is safe and satisfactory for both motorists and pedestrians.
At its meeting on Thursday 9 September the Committee gave conditional planning permission for the following applications:- BAS/0686/99 - Office blocks, Charrington's Yard, Radford Way, BAS/0545/99 - 11 Detached Dwelling Houses, Southend Road, South of Bell Hill Close, BAS/0568 - Norsey Wood Information Centre - Single Storey Extention.
One of our advertisers lost a considerable amount of money which was eventually found and left by his front door unfortunately the good samaritan did not leave a name and address. Consequently we were asked to include the following letter in this issue of the newsletter. "I would like to take the opportunity to thank the honest person who found an envelope on or near my driveway some time ago. The Good Samaritan I believe lives in the lower half of Whinhams Way. The envelope contained a sum of money and was kindly placed by my front door. If anybody knows the identity of the person I would be grateful if they could contact me so I can show my appreciation. Alfie Swan 01277 655714".
Earlier in the year we were contacted by one of our members who expressed concern about the condition of the tennis courts in Lake Meadows. We wrote to Basildon Council asking them to investigate the complaints and to advise us if anything could be done to improve the surface of the courts. They asked the Court Advisory Service of the Lawn Tennis Association for their opinion who subsequently sent us a copy of a report of a site inspection carried out by Lee West Associates, Chartered Quantity Surveyors and Construction Consultants. The company concludes that the courts are suitable for social tennis but recommends that the courts could be used for up to 24 months before resurfacing with a single layer of tarmacadam. Unfortunately the cost of this work would be in the region of £5,500 per court and in the current economic climate it is unlikely to be given a high priority.
