Twinning
Visit
Four students and two teachers
from schools in our twin town
of Fishers, USA visited Billericay from
24 June
to 1 July when they were hosted by parents and teachers of Mayflower
and
Billericay schools. They obviously had a good time as the article
below,
written by one of the students, shows:
“It turns out many of the sayings about England
are really just that; just
sayings. English food is notorious for being average yet we found
ourselves
satiated after taking second, third helpings of savoury
shepherd’s pies,
“finger-lickin’ good” fish ’n chips, delectable
trifles and more heavenly
treats. Yet it was not only our waistline that gained some – we
each had an
additional suitcase on the return trip stuffed full of English tea,
biscuits and
chocolate. Also we have heard much about England’s rainy
weather yet this
notion was debunked as not a cloud was to be seen in the sky each
gorgeously
sunny day. Whilst it is needless to say that these factors helped
in making
this trip incredible, other aspects of England
and of the charmingly quaint town of Billericay
also made us fall head over heels in love with this country.
Immediately we
were welcome by outgoing and friendly nature of everyone we met, from
the
students and teachers to the average shopkeeper and person on the
street.

We
are deeply grateful about how our host families and the Sister Cities
Association made sure we had a wonderful time – taking days off
work and school
– they showed us places like London,
Cambridge, Southend-on-Sea, Dover,
Brighton and the rich and vibrant
culture in
and around Billericay. Overall this trip made us feel as if we were at
not only
a home from home, but also a home where there were endless rooms to
explore and
marvel at the various sights, histories and people in each –
thank you
Billericay for making this exchange so exciting and memorable. We
eagerly await
the reunion in October and hope you will enjoy Fishers, Indiana as well
– all
of us are looking forward to returning next year for our high school
graduation
trip. Cheers to being sister cities! “
