Fairtrade Town Status

Buying certified fair trade products is by no means an answer to bridging the yawning gap between rich and poor countries. You can’t change the world by drinking Fairtrade cappuccino, but it’s a small step in the right direction. And  Billericay is hoping to take a step in the right direction by becoming a Fairtrade Town which will make it easier for people to have that Fairtrade cappuccino (or tea or chocolate or juice). The campaign to make Billericay a Fairtrade Town is doing well but does not meet all the criteria yet  We need one more catering outlet to come alongside Café in the Park, The Chequers and Greggs who already sell at least 2 Fairtrade items. The other concern is the lack of involvement from schools and workplaces. We have made a start and have done assemblies in schools but they need to be using Fairtrade products in the staffroom, the canteen or in a tuck-shop if appropriate. If this is already being done in your school please let us know.

Is your workplace Fairtrade yet?

With a growing range of high quality, competitively priced Fairtrade products to choose from, more and more workplaces are choosing to make a difference. The Billericay Fairtrade Group are urging employers and employees to opt for Fairtrade in offices across the town. Why not use Fairtrade products in your vending machines, your cafeteria, your office kitchen and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea in meetings or to your clients?

If your business, works or office already offers Fairtrade options we would like to hear from you, Or if you would like information, help or samples let us know.
