At 1200 utc on the 1st of December 1997, one of the two UK Rescue Co-ordination Centres - Plymouth Rescue, closed down for good. For many years the station had controlled rescue assets in the southern half of the UK, but due to advances in technology allowing the "remoting" of distant transmitters, the station was closed, and all operations moved to the northern co-ordination centre at RAF Kinloss in Scotland. The closure was carried out on 5680 kHz, with Plymouth signing off with the helicopters and MRTs, and handing over control to their new handlers. I was fortunate enough to catch this and get it on tape, and now here is the closedown message in full for anyone who missed it. |
