Below you will find a number of the pictures I took during visits to a number of the UK's Football Club Radio Stations (sadly many of these are no longer on air). I was fortunate enough to work for Radio Latics, Oldham Athletic's matchday station, and was able to visit a number of the other stations as a result. Of the ones shown below only Oakwell AM at Barnsley on 1575 kHz, and Manchester United Radio on 1413 kHz are still going strong on matchdays. It was interesting to visit these stations, but the downside was that I usually had to watch the match as well, which was not much fun for a devoted Rugby League fan, who hates the round ball game and its overpaid primadonnas! :-) |

One of the few remaining Football Club Radio Stations, Oakwell AM operates from Barnsley FC in South Yorkshire on matchdays. (268kb) |
This shot shows Radio Leeds United owner and presenter (and well known Yorkshire TV presenter) Jon Hammond, who provided all of the pre and post match programmes on this station. The football commentaries were carried out by former England International Norman (Bites yer Legs) Hunter. (219kb) |
This was an interesting station, the studio was built into the back of a large Mercedes van, and this could be driven up on matchday, with the antenna and transmitter in a trailer, which could be towed behind it. (231kb) |
This shot of the Radio Canary studio was taken during a visit to the station back in 19150. At that time Norwich City FC were in the Premier League, and had just had the station and studio fitted out by Creatv, the creators of "Club Radio". (413kb) |
This shot was taken in the Norwich ground at Carrow Road, and shows the commentary team, who provides the full match coverage for the station. (428kb) |
Another shot of the Radio Canary, this time showing the mixing desk and tape recorders. Nowadays goal highlights would be recorded and edited digitally, in those days it was still tape, splicer and cutting block. (431kb) |
Another view of the Canary studios, this shows what a nice view of the pitch they had from the studio. (429kb) |
This shot shows the base of the Radio Canary aerial mast, this was sited close to a nearby canal, which must have done wonders for its efficiency. (434kb) |
This shot was taken at Newcastle United's studio, and shows the location of their studios. I will add a few shots of the inside of the studio once I remember where I put them! (206kb) |
This shot shows Radio Latics (Oldham Athletic's Matchday Service) presenter Nigel Hobson, with old friend, and Piccadilly Radio commentator, the well known Tommy (Doc) Docherty. This shot was taken outside of the Radio Latics commentary box in 1995. (252kb) |
This shot shows the Monopole aerial used by this famous club for their matchday service on 1413 kHz. This was taken over 10 years ago, and is still going strong to this day. (228kb) |
This shot shows the aerial base of the Radio Latics antenna mast just after installation. I have pictures of the full installation and erection of the aerial, and will put them on line one of these days. (202kb) |
This shot shows the 'temporary' monopole and TX unit used by Radio Latics whilst the main unit was being installed. This is typical of many of the Radica systems used for RSL and LPAM broadcasts, and identical to the one used by Radio Leeds United. (273kb) |
This montage of shots show the innards of the TX unit, and also the aerial itself and capacity hat. The mast can be dropped down into the trailer unit. (190kb) |
