Brouwerij de Smedt / Affligem Brouwerij

Location: Opwijk, Belgium
Website: Affligem Website
Records show that the Abbey of Affligem was making beer by 1574 although the abbey itself was founded way earlier in 1074. Although obviously the beer was originally brewed by the monks, for many years it was being brewed under licence by the Op-Ale brewery and now the nearby De Smedt brewery in Opwijk brews the beer on the abbey's behalf. Today the De Smedt brewery is owned by Heineken who produce and market the abbey beer.
