Augustiner-Bräu Wagner KG

Location: Munich, Bavaria, Germany
Website: Augustiner
Like many breweries who can trace their history back to
medieval times, Augustiner’s history begins with a monastic establishment, this
time the Augustinian monastery founded in 1294. Records show that by 1328 beer
was being brewed in the monastery and this is the date that the brewery
considers to be its founding year. The Bavarian state eventually took over the
monastery in 1817 and the brewery was denationalised and moved to a new location
in the city. In 1829 the brewery was purchased by Anton Wagner and the J.W. in
the brewery logo stands for Joseph Wagner, the son on Anton. Currently the
brewery is independent being owned 50% for a public utility foundation (as
decreed in the will of the last descendant of the Wagner family) and the other
50% being owned by other limited partners. As one of Munich’s breweries,
Augustiner runs one of the major tents at the annual Oktoberfest where it is
consider one of the preferred drinking locations for the Bavarian locals rather
than tourists.
