Founded in 1817 in the town of Bitburg the brewery was taken over by Bertrand Simon in 1842 and since this point the name of Simon family has been connected with the Bitburger brewery. Famous for the "Bitte ein Bit" advertising slogan the beer is well known in Germany and also exports to the United States. Bitburger took over the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei in 1991.
