Brewing in the town of St Gallen is an age old tradition that can be traced back to monastery plans from the year 820. In 1779 the brewery Schützengarten was founded by Johann Ulrich Tobler and claims to be the oldest brewery in Swizerland. In 1872 brewer Arnold Billwiller took over the brewery and set about a rapid expansion plan.
