Founded by J.C. Jacobson in Copenhagen in 1847, Carlsberg would have us all believe that it is "probably the best lager in the world". Whether it's the best or not is not for discussion here but it is certainly one of the most powerful voices in the brewing world. In 1970 Carlsberg merged with its arch Danish rivals Tuborg to form United Breweries A/S and in 1992 Carlsberg merged with British brewers Allied Breweries to form Carlsberg-Tetley. In 2001 the company was renamed to simply Carlsberg Breweries. It now owns breweries all over the world where both the Carlsberg products and other well known brands are brewed.
