The Castlemaine brewery was established in 1878 by the Fitzgerald brothers in Brisbane, Queensland. In 1928 it took over local rival Perkins & Co and assumed the official name of Castlemaine Perkins Ltd. In 1979 it was merged with the Australian drinks giant Toohey's to be renamed Castlemaine Tooheys Ltd. This was subsequently taken over by the Australian businessman Alan Bond before it was acquired by the drinks company Lion Nathan in 1992.
