Located in Aarhus in Denmark the Ceres Brewery was found in 1856 by a grocer called M.C. Lottrup. He named the brewery after the Roman Goddess Ceres, the goddess of plants, especially cereals. The brewey's reputation grew and grew and in 1914, Ceres was designated with the honour of “Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court”. The brewery was sold by the founder's son-in-law to the Østjyske Bryggerier A/S although in 1956 the name of the brewery was changed back to Ceres. In 1976 Ceres merged with two other Jutland breweries, Thor Bryggerierne in Randers and the Aalborg brewery Urban (closed in 1986), under the name Jyske Bryggerier. There was then a further merger with the Faxe Brewery which created the next largest Brewing company in Denmark, the Danish Brewery Group, which is now called Royal Unibrew.
