John Courage was a shipping agent originating from Aberdeen, in 1787 he moved to London and founded a business when he purchased a brewery in Southwark. The company, known as Courage & Donaldson extended its operations to the England's Home Counties, with various mergers and acquisitions. In 1955 the company merged with its great Southwark rival Barclay & Perkins. After the 1955 merger the brewery was known as Courage, Barclay & Company Limited. Courage bought out Nicholson's, a Maidenhead based brewery in 1960 and in the same year Simonds brewery in Reading, where it then based one of it major breweries and from 1960 it was known as Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Company Limited. The company was renamed Courage Ltd in October 1970. In 1961 it bought the Georges Brewery in Bristol, which again became one of its major brewing locations. In 1995 the breweries were sold to Scottish & Newcastle and became part of Scottish Courage, the brewing arm of Scottish & Newcastle. In 2007 the brewing rights to the Courage beer brands were bought by Wells & Young's.

Remarks: “Take Courage” was a classic advertisement tag line used most successfully by Courage. You may also remember the TV ads featuring the singing talents of Chas & Dave. One of the ads can be viewed here, sadly it’s not the classic “Courage Best, Courage Best, Courage Best beats all the rest” or “Gertcha” |
