The Gösser brewery came about in 1782 when Max Kober founded the brewery. By 1892 the brewery was the third largest in the Steiermark area and by 1920 they were exporting their product. in 1977 the brewery was merged into the Steirerbrau group (with Puntigamer and Reininghaus) and in 1992 the Steirerbrau group and Gösser were taken over by the BBAG (Brau Union Österreich AG). Today the brewery is part of Austria AG which is controlled by Heineken.
