Established in 1856 by Leon Maes, the "Half Moon" brewery had been recorded much earlier than this. The brewery has stayed in the hands of the Maes family until the present day.

Remarks: The name "Straffe Hendick" (meaning Strong Henry) was originally from the Halve Maan stable but the brand name was taken over by  Brouwerij Riva. When Liefmans Breweries went bust in 2007 the name was temporarily used by  Duvel Moortgat. In 2008 the Halve Maan was given permission to use the name again.
