Hansa was established in 1891. Won Grand Prix medal in 1900 world exhibition in Paris. In 1989 the brewery was bought by Pripps of neighbouring Sweden but in when Pripps and Ringnes merged in 1996 the EU ruled that Hansa must be sold off. It was bought by a group of Norwegian investors. In 1997 Hansa and Borg merged to form Hansa Borg Bryggerier. In 1999 Hansa Borg bought the Christianssands Bryggeri from Swedish brewers Spendrups.
