The Het Anker Brewery claims to be the oldest operational brewery in Belgium with a history stretched back past the first recorded date of 1369. Jan in den Anker was documented as being a member of the brewing guild and it was his son, Matthijs, who bought the town brewey in 1433. The brewery was bought again by the Van Breedam family in 1873 and is currently in the hands of Charles Leclef, the fifth generation of this family.
